Octavo, inscribed in green pencil on ffep, "Mrs. Jane Ingram from the author / April 3 1885" and with Whitman's ink signature on the title page; two portraits of the author printed on sheets extraneous to the text, the first between pages 28 and 29, and the wood-engraved portrait between pages 296 and 297; bound in publisher's green cloth over beveled boards, t.e.g., yellow endleaves; text block shifting away from the boards, corners worn; wear at head and tail, inner joints cracked; contemporary pencil marks to text, 7 3/4 x 4 3/4 in.
