Cincinnati engraver Elijah C. Middleton devised an innovative method for printing on canvas-backed paper using oil-based inks, producing affordable, painting-like color images. He published a series of portraits of famous Americans, beginning around 1861 that included George and Martha Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster and Ulysses S. Grant.
