Description:

Washington, George (1732-1799) and Martha (1731-1802) Framed Chromolithographs. Cincinnati: Elijah C. Middleton, 1864. Two framed chromolithographic portraits printed on paper and mounted on canvas, in matching contemporary gilt frames, restored, each 13 1/2 x 16 1/2 in.
Cincinnati engraver Elijah C. Middleton devised an innovative method for printing on canvas-backed paper using oil-based inks, producing affordable, painting-like color images. He published a series of portraits of famous Americans, beginning around 1861 that included George and Martha Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster and Ulysses S. Grant.
Provenance: The Estate of David Spinney.
