Newell & Son Yellow-painted Surveying Compass, Boston, c. 1795, 5 1/2-in. printed paper card marked in center Newell & Son Maker's East End of Faneuil Hall Boston, outer scale divided 0-90 in four quadrants, cardinal and intercardinal points in block letters, and secondary intercardinal points are handwritten, blued-steel hand engraved N and S at the ends, mortise and tenoned sighting vanes, lead tripod sleeve underneath, original yellow-painted tripod, associated later chains, three ash bows, and a brass protractor/scale combination, compass lg. 14 in.
