Description:

Continental School, 17th Century

Galatea, After Annibale Carracci (Italian, 1560-1609) Fresco in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome
Monogrammed "AC" in graphite and with a collector's stamp l.l., inscribed "P.P. Rubens d'apres Raphael" in ink l.r., titled in an inscription on the reverse.
Red chalk and charcoal on laid paper mounted to canvas, 10 1/4 x 16 3/4 in. (26.0 x 42.8 cm),framed.
Condition: Creasing, toning, soiling.

N.B. The work bears an interesting collector's mark, a star, similar to the one generaly associated with Nicholas Lanier (L.2885),but more closely resembling a mark associated with Johan Peter Samuel Guildal (1855-1920),a Dutch industrialist (L.2886a). The watermark may be a fool's cap. The inscription on the reverse, which is in a later hand, is difficult to read, but it begins "From Arundel..." This could refer to Lord Arundel, who traveled in Italy in the 17th century buying art for Charles I of England. It is possible that this drawing was made after an engraving of the ceiling fresco.
Estimate $1,000-2,000

Inscription on the reverse begins, "From Arundel..." The notes are in a later hand and include "Rubens" which would be misattribution.
Hinge remnants to the reverse.
