Description:
Robert Motherwell (American, 1915-1991)
Game of Chance, 1987, edition of 100 plus proofs, published by Tyler Graphics, Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York (Engberg & Banach, 377). Signed and numbered "R. Motherwell 41/100" in pencil l.r., publisher's dry stamp l.r. Color aquatint, lithograph, and collage on paper, image size 23 x 16 3/8 in. (58.3 x 41.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Deckled edges with gentle cockling, hinged to a backing sheet, not examined out of frame.
Provenance: A private California collection.
Estimate $4,000-6,000
The backing sheet has detached from the mat so the print has shifted slightly downward in the frame. The verso of the work cannot be examined without destroying the frame (the strainer is glued to the frame),but the sheet is floated so all edges of the recto are visible. Sheet measures 35 x 27 1/2 in. (89.0 x 70.0 cm) and does not appear to be laid down. No additional issues to report.
