Description:
Robert Motherwell (American, 1915-1991)
America - La France Variations IX, 1984, edition of 60 plus proofs, published by Tyler Graphics, Ltd., Bedford Village, New York (Engberg & Banach, 337). Signed and numbered "Motherwell 36/60" in pencil l.r., publisher's dry stamp l.r. Color lithograph and collage on paper, image size 27 3/4 x 18 1/4 in. (70.4 x 46.3 cm),framed.
Condition: Deckled edges with cockling, hinged to a backing sheet, not examined out of frame.
Provenance: A private California collection.
Estimate $2,500-3,500
Sheet measures 28 1/2 x 21 1/2 in. (72.4 x 54.5 cm). The backing sheet has detached from the mat so the print has shifted downward in the frame, and there are areas in the bottom edge that are curling up having come into contact with the overmat. The verso of the work cannot be examined without destroying the frame, but the sheet is floated so all edges of the recto are visible, and it appears to be hinged rather than laid down. Possible 1/4 inch tear in sheet at u.r. edge. No additional issues to report.
