N.B. Carle van Loo was a celebrated artist of his era, much like François Boucher. His Head of a Child and other drawings were popularized in the 18th century as engravings both in ink and in the crayon manner by Jean-Charles François. These prints were greatly admired and copied by other artists of the period. This drawing may be an 18th-century copy after one of the engravings.
