French School, 19th/20th Century
Bataillons de Chasseurs Alpins (Les diables bleus), c. 1918. Signed indistinctly "L.R..." l.r., inscribed "Le Col de la Gd Casse/Plutian de...ignes" in pencil on the reverse. Watercolor on paperboard, 7 1/4 x 9 in., oval format, in an oval frame. Condition: Gentle toning, fading.
N.B. According to an inscription on the frame backing, this watercolor was brought from France to New York in 1918 by Dr. George Louis Meylan, after he had helped the French army establish the Foyer du Soldat, rest and recreation camps for French soldiers.
