After Correggio (Italian, c. 1489-1534)
Jupiter and Io. Unsigned, with a label from Ben Kabatznick, Inc., Brookline, Massachusetts, affixed to the back of the frame. Oil on canvas, 22 x 17 3/4 in., in a carved and gilded frame. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. minor surface grime.
N.B. The painting at hand presents a detail of the original work by Correggio now in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The Correggio work, created in 1532-33, was commissioned by Federico Gonzaga II, Duke of Mantua, purportedly to decorate a room dedicated to the loves of Jupiter (Zeus).
