"Beat the Bird" Pin, 1964, white pin with blue printed inscription "BEAT THE BIRD," attached to inscribed fragment of notepaper from "Robbins Nest," Middletown, Rhode Island, pin dia. 1 1/4 in.

Note: "Beat the Bird" was a slogan used by the crew of the 12-meter yacht Constellation seeking to defeat the yacht American Eagle during the 1964 round-robin races known as the "Observation Trials" to pick the America's Cup defender at Newport, Rhode Island. The note here, on the "Robbins Nest" stationery, is reportedly the proverbial "cocktail napkin" on which the slogan was coined, by famed America's Cup yachtsman Eric Ridder.
