Spanish Language Manuscript Letter Book Regarding Shipping, 1797-1817. A collection of manuscript retained copies in a secretarial hand, thousands of letters in Spanish, written by Antonio Argote Villalobos, Spanish consul at New Orleans, and later Norfolk, Virginia, regarding shipping and Spanish privateering in the United States, most letters addressed to Josef Ignacio de Viar and Don Carlos Martínez de Irujo y Tacón (1763-1824); folio-format amalgam of chunky signatures stab-sewn together, with inserts, in various secretarial hands; first and last few leaves browned, chipped, with some marginal losses, the edges dusty, contents good. [Together with] a bound manuscript port log in Spanish regarding shipments to Cuba and other ports from Norfolk, including detailed manifests; newspaper notifications of the law regarding Spanish imports clipped and tacked inside the front board, 1817-40, front board detached.
