N.B. Raoul Dufy consistently painted still life compositions throughout his career. He would render the same arrangement a few times, altering ever so subtly certain details. For example, we know that he depicted this bowl of pears with a shell at least one other time, as this watercolor is almost identical to the one noted no. 1403 in the Raoul Dufy Catalogue Raisonné des aquarelles, gouaches et pastels. We can therefore tentatively date this watercolor to circa 1919.
A certificate of authenticity issued by Raoul Dufy scholar Fanny Guillon-Laffaille will accompany the lot.
Estimate $10,000-15,000
Two surface abrasions (scratches): each 1 inch long. One on the rim of the bowl and another in the blue background left of the bowl. Small tear 1/2 inch long along top rim on the left. Remains of a hinge (0.5 cm) lower right edge.
