Italian Ruins
Possibly signed and dated u.l., with collector's stamp "PHL" l.r.
In on paper, 7 x 10 7/16 in. (18.0 x 26.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Losses and tears stabilized, laid down on supporting sheet, toning, staining. foxing.

N.B. The collector's stamp is from Prosper Henry Lankrink (1628-1692),a British painter and assistant to Peter Lely in London (Lugt, L.2090).

Losses to three of the corners, stabilized tears along the lower center edge measuring 1 1/2 inches and 1 inch, with small losses along those tears. Various nicks and losses to the edges of the sheet, the largest measuring 3/8 inch across and 1/8 inch high located l.l. edge. Glue stain or similar at u.c. edge Staining and foxing overall.

The supporting sheet is heavy laid paper and measures 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches. It has a very faint architectural sketch on the reverse, along with remnants of an old mounting. The dimensions of the frame are 11 1/8 x 14 3/8 in.

Skinner has been contacted by a drawings scholar who tracked down the original drawing on which this work is based in collection of the Louvre. The original drawing is by Matthijs Bril the Younger (Flemish, 1550-1584) and the subject is described as a view in the ancient forum of Nerva in Rome.
