Description:
School of Peter Lely (Dutch, 1618-1680)
Portrait of an Elegant Woman with an Ermine-lined Cape. Unsigned, with three Fogg Art Museum loan labels on the back of the frame. Oil on canvas, 36 x 30 3/8 in., in an elaborately carved frame. Condition: Lined, skinning, retouch, craquelure, surface grime.
N.B. Through the courtesy of the Harvard University Art Museums, the loan labels on the frame were recently researched and found to coincide with three separate loans between mid-June and early October in the years 1938, 1939, and 1941. However, no reason was given for the loans, and the lender of the painting provided the identification of the painting at that time for the Fogg records.
Estimate $600-800
The Fogg Art Musem loan labels bear the numbers "...85.1939" and "520.1941" suggesting that the work was loaned to the Fogg in 1939 and 1941.
The work has been lined and put on a new stretcher. It seems to be retrofit into the frame, so that is is not positive that this frame was originally with this work.
