First editions, two octavo volumes, half-title in each, both illustrated by Sidney Paget, cloth covers of the publisher's bindings bound into the back of each; the two bound in modern uniform full dark blue crushed morocco bindings by Henry Sotheran, a.e.g., spines lettered and ruled in gold, housed together in a custom slipcase; autograph letter signed by Doyle tipped into The Adventures, undated, addressed only, "Dear Sir," stating that he believes it "wiser not to hold forth on several subjects simultaneously," old folds; 9 x 6 in.
