Denoyer-Geppert 16-inch Visual Relief Lunar Globe, c. 1969, twelve printed gores showing the cartography of the moon's surface, brass horizon band with scale from 0-360, all resting on a faux walnut metal base, tag reading in part: Visual-relief Lunar Globe Cartocraft Edition 1969 Model No. 40702, ht. 20 in.
Note: Imagery based on the photography taken from the Apollo 10 mission to accurately portray the cartography of the moon's surface. To commemorate the 1969 Apollo 10 lunar mission, NASA contracted with Denoyer Geppert to design and build the first lunar globe using the Apollo 10 film footage and photographs of the far side of the moon. The astronauts of the mission presented special versions of this globe to then President Nixon, and 4 other officials. See the American Globe Preservation Society, AMGS Newsletter, March 2012, p 4.
200 first edition Lunar Globes were produced. Subsequent editions of this Lunar Globe identify the landing sites of later Apollo moon missions. This globe is a very early edition, showing no subsequent landing sites.
