Description:

Two Salt-glazed Stoneware Hunt Jugs, England, c. 1800, each of bulbous shape and with a brown wash, one probably London and in the manner of the Sanders potworks leased to Thomas Norris, ribbed collar above central relief of two boors carousing over a barrel head, flanked by a windmill and stones, a fox hunting scene with hounds and horseman below, silver plated band to rim, ht. 6 7/8; the other probably Bristol with relief of Bacchanalian boys above a deer hunting scene with hounds and horsemen, ht. 5 1/4 in.

Provenance: The Troy Chappell Collection.

Literature: Similar fox hunt jug illustrated in Joseph Kishere and the Mortlake Potteries, by Howarth and Hildyard, plate 38; similar deer hunt jug illustrated in Browne Muggs, by Hildyard, illus. 206.

Fox jug: Restorations to handle and to rim chips; extensive hairlines to rim and body.
Deer jug: Sizable repair to spout; several rim chips.
