Description:

Carved Mahogany Armchair, attributed to Robert Harold (fl. 1765-92),Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with round shouldered crest, pierced splat, shaped arms on carved supports with scrolled volutes, and bowed seat rail on square molded legs joined by stretchers, refinished, (minor repairs),ht. 37 1/8, seat ht. 19 in.

Literature: Brock Jobe, ed., Portsmouth Furniture Masterworks from the New Hampshire Seacoast (Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, 1993),pp. 319-20, plate 86, for an illustrated side chair with identical features.

Seat corner braces removed and replaced by corner blocks, plugs at bases of arm supports.
