Reaching Jaguar
Signed "Anna V. Hyatt" on the back of the tree trunk, numbered "#14" at the edge of the base, stamped "GORHAM CO FOUNDERS Q477" on the base.
Bronze with brown patina, height 9 in. (22.9 cm).
Condition: Oxidation or similar to some of the interstices, minor dust to the interstices.
N.B. A premier animal sculptor, Anna Hyatt Huntington had the opportunity to study Señor Lopez, a jaguar from Paraguay who was the first feline occupant of the Lion House at the Bronx Zoo. The artist created two sculptures based on that jaguar, and one version of the pair are installed as gateposts at the zoo. This bronze is a small version of the Reaching Jaguar.

Areas of corrosion most noticeable along the interstices where the jaguar's body meets the stump and along the edge of the jaguar's neck, under its chin, and less prominent under the jaguar's body.
A small cluster of abrasions in the bronze on the back of the jaguar on its left side, the most prominent measuring about 1/8 inch across, with two shallower ones (one shaped like a reverse check mark) below it. Scattered bits of white paint or similar overall. Some wear to the patina. The base of the stump is filled with plaster or a similar material.
