Signed and dated "ABierstadt 1878" l.r., identified on a label from Chapellier Galleries, New York, on the back of the frame.
Oil on Winsor & Newton board, 12 1/4 x 18 3/8 in. (31.3 x 46.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Retouch primarily to address minor frame abrasion, small paint losses along upper edge, fine stable craquelure, minor surface grime.

Provenance: Terry de Lapp Gallery, Los Angeles, 1966; Chapellier Galleries, 1969; Gustave J. S. White Estate Auctioneers, Newport, Rhode Island, August 11, 1993, Lot 101; to current owner by family descent.

Exhibitions: Chapellier Galleries, 1969, as catalogue number 74.

N.B. Beavertail Light on Conanicut Island is suggested as an possible location on an unattributed handwritten label affixed to the back of the frame. The painting is listed in the Albert Bierstadt Catalogue Project as record number 1244.

The losses along the top edge are minimal, the larger measuring 5/16 in. across and 1/16 inch high. There is some pigment fluorescence to the distanct sails on the horizon at the left and at the center of the sun, which may be natural. Minute stray droplet of white pigment u.c.
