Pittsburgh, 1955-56, printed c. 1950s. W. Eugene Smith credit and copyright stamps and additional pencil annotations on the back of the mount. Gelatin silver print, image/sheet size 13 5/8 x 8 3/4 in. (34.6 x 22.3 cm),matted, unframed.
Condition: Mounted, unobtrusive crease l.l., scattered minor losses at edges.
N.B. The noted American photographer W. Eugene Smith worked on and off for Life magazine from the late 1930s until 1955 when he resigned over editorial differences. That same year he began a three-week commission to produce 100 photographs commemorating Pittsburgh's bicentennial. Inspired by the city as a window onto the complexities of 1950s America, Smith ultimately spent a year there during which time he made over 17,000 photographs.
