N.B. The reverse of the painting and its frame are stamped "Thompson Collection/New York-1870/Geo. P. Rowell." George Presbury Rowell (1838 -1908) was an American advertising executive and publisher. As the brother in law of wealthy philanthropist Thomas Thompson (1798-1869),he served as the estate executor to his sister, Thompson's widow, Elizabeth Rowell Thompson. The stamps suggest provenance through the collection of Elizabeth Rowell Thompson and probably Thomas Thompson. The inscription "Winthrop Astor Chanler..." would also suggest a possible provenance through the Astor family at some point.
