Colman, Benjamin (1673-1747) A Discourse Had in the College-Hall at Cambridge, March 27, 1722.Before the Baptism of R. Judah Monis. Boston: for Daniel Henchman, 1722.
First and only 18th century edition, octavo, containing four separate discourses, each with its own title page; bound in later sheepskin boards; front board detached, spine fragmentary, last text leaf torn with loss to bottom corner, affecting eleven lines of text, spotting and toning to text leaves, 6 1/4 x 3 3/4 in.
Judah Monis (1683-1764) was the first Jewish person to receive a college degree from a university in North America, graduating M.A. from Harvard in 1720. He was subsequently hired as an instructor in Hebrew at the same institution, although he was required to convert to Christianity to do so. He was the first person to be a professor of Hebrew in this country, and wrote and published the first Hebrew grammar textbook in the States.
