Description:

Cheyenne Rifle Scabbard Attributed to Cheyenne Chief "Roman Nose," c. early 1860s, with remnant fringe and red trade cloth along the side and on both ends, the ends beaded with multicolored geometric designs on a light blue background, (bead loss),lg. 48 in.

Note: The typed paper attached to the scabbard reads in part: "this gun-case belonged to Roman Nose, a notable chief of the Southern Cheyenne. Major Thorndike of the U.S Cavalry gave it to my father, Louis Naghle McLane. Roman Nose was killed in the desperate battle fought on Beecher's Island, September 17, 1868" (see accompanying photograph of the label for the whole history). The note is signed "Lucy Heely McLane." Louis Naghle McLane (1850-1907),then to daughter, Lucy Heely McLane (1890/91-1975). The scabbard has remained in the Denver area for over a century.
