Simple Theodolite with Prismatic Compass by Schmalcalder's, 19th century, London, lacquered brass instrument with a 6-in. scope above the 2 1/2-in. fern-colored paper compass dial, dial has inverted scale for reading through the prism that is located on the eyepiece end of the scope, cardinal points in bold, and reading Schmalcalder's Patent. No 82 Strand London, locking dial knob on side and, engraved 704 B on the bottom, all housed in a tapered. fitted mahogany box.
