McDowell-style Forage Cap and Image of First Sergeant James L. McClure, Killed at the Battle of Antietam, c. 1861-62, blue superfine broadcloth body (missing chinstrap),with a ghost of a G above 12, black-painted leather crescent-shaped visor, a black silk liner (some loss),and a turned leather sweatband; and an oval image on cardstock of McClure wearing his uniform and this forage cap, ht. 6, lg. 9 1/2 in.

Note: James L. McClure enlisted in the army on August 10th, 1861, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in company G of the 12th Pennsylvania Reserves, he died on October 10th, 1862, in Smoketown, Maryland, of wounds received on September 17th, 1862 at the battle of Antietam.

Some age appropriate loss of cloth from wear on one side of the crown, missing the chinstrap, and some liner loss, image has some light foxing and a few stains.
