Unsigned, inscribed "Sir Godfrey Kneller/..." on a presentation plaque.
Oil on metal (oval format),30 3/8 x 25 in. (77.2 x 63.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Retouch over areas of surface pitting and/or old paint losses located mainly in the sitter's hair and dress.
N.B. This oval portrait appears to be a detail after the portrait of then Princess Anne with her son, William, Duke of Gloucester, ascribed to Godfrey Kneller, c. 1694. The turn of the head, hairstyle interwoven with pearls with curls falling to her left, white ruffled chemise beneath the brown dress, and touch of ermine at her left shoulder are as depicted in the Kneller portrait. Anne ascended to the throne in 1702 after the death of William III.
