Description:

Arts & Crafts Gold, Enamel, and Gem-set Pendant Necklace, Frank Gardner Hale, designed as a stylized butterfly with carved serpentine wings and flexibly-set enamel center, suspending carved green hardstone drops, with jade bosses, jade and enamel clasp, and joined by flattened curb link chain, the pendant lg. 4 3/4 x 3 1/2, the chain lg. 38 in., signed F.G. HALE, in original fitted box.

Provenance: The necklace passed down through the family of Irma Endres Diescher Messler. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1887, attended Pennsylvania University for Women, and studied abroad in Paris. She married George Messler in 1924 and they moved to the North East. After her husband George passed away, Irma moved to St Petersburg FL. She passed away in 1967 and the necklace descended through the family.
Estimate $8,000-10,000

Overall very good. The wires suspending the two drops are possibly not original. Split (from the making?) to the top of the butterfly above the enamel drop, not obtrusive, and obscuring the H of the signature. Very minor evidence of solder to base of enamel drop, not noticed, and to the bar beneath it that stops it from flipping back, and to one prong on the reverse of the jade, not at all obtrusive. Box with normal scuffs, fading to interior fabric, otherwise very good.
