Philip Boss (American, 19th Century)

Two Portraits: Mr. William Penn Sheldon of New York State, and Possibly His Sister.
William inscribed "Wm. Penn Sheldon/July 25th 1847/Aged 19 yr/P. Boss Art."
Oil on canvas, each seated on a salmon-upholstered chair, the lady in a blue dress, the gentleman in a striped vest, 28 x 22 in., in molded black-painted frames.
Condition: Very minor retouch.

Note: William Penn Sheldon was born in New York in 1827, died in 1916, and is buried in Iowa. he had two sisters, Mary Ann and Phebe, either of whom the portrait may portray.
Estimate $2,000-4,000

Portrait of the woman has a very small spot of retouch on her nose and small areas of paint loss at the corners.
