Description:

After Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié (French, 1845-1916)

Bronze Figure of David, brown patinated bronze figure holding a sword, the head of Goliath underfoot, on round base of eastern strapwork roundels, with Hebrew word for "David" inscribed on front, signed "428 Barbedienne Fondeur Paris" with "REDUCTION MECHANIQUE A. COLLAS BREVETE" seal, ht. 36 in.

N.B. The original David was sculpted in 1872, commissioned by the State. Mercie's use of the David and Goliath imagery suggests to the French people that even after war, one day they shall return victorious. The sculpture was first on display at the Musée du Luxembourg, and can now be seen at the Musée d'Orsay. The sculpture became so popular in its time that six sizes were cast by Barbadienne.
