Strolling Actresses Dressing in a Barn, from Four Times of the Day, London, published 1738. Engraving on paper, sight size 16 1/4 x 20 3/4 in., framed. Condition: Toning, spotting, small tears and chips to margins.
N.B. This print depicts a company of actresses preparing for the final performance of The Devil to Pay in Heaven, a satire on the mystery plays which were heavily controlled by the church. The painting that this print was based on was destroyed in a fire at Littleton House near Staines in 1874.
