Oil on canvas laid down on panel, 22 x 18 in. (55.8 x 45.7 cm),framed.
Condition: Canvas has been laid down on panel, surface has minor cracking with scattered retouch.
Provenance: An estate from Maine and Pennsylvania.
N.B. This lot is accompanied by the exhibition catalog The Paintings of Charles Hawthorne, published by the University of Connecticut Museum of Art, 1968.
The model is possibly Sylvia Shaw, an American sculptor whose bronze Bird Girl was used as the cover illustration for the 1994 novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

The craquelure is fine except for the areas above her shoulders (in the background). The retouch is several scattered dashes and dots. with additional areas of retouch to old losses at the edges. The varnish layer is thick.
This lot is also accompanied by an outgoing receipt from the Portland Museum of Art, dated 2/13/15, loan #9.2005.1. The museum confirmed the work was on loan to the museum from 2005-2008.
