N.B. With his move from Budapest to Paris in 1925, André Kertész became immersed in a vibrant artistic community that included Brassaï, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, and Piet Mondrian among others. He lived and worked in Paris for the next decade, photographing intimate scenes found in wandering the city's streets and producing commercial work. Kertész immigrated to New York in 1936, bringing with him a European modernist sensibility that is evident in Homing Ship, in which the tree reflected in the foreground puddle and the schooner with legs traversing Central Park add a poetic surrealism to an everyday scene.
