H. Winthrop Peirce (American, 1850-1935)

Signing of the Treaty. Signed and dated "HWinthrop Peirce /930" l.l., inscription reads "Honorable Caleb Cushing, Doctor Paker...Keepers of the Seal of the Emperor of China..." Watercolor, pencil, and gouache on paper, 18 1/2 x 24 in., framed. Condition: Tears and 3-in. loss u.c., paper toned, discoloration.

Note: Peirce was a Boston-born artist who lived at 6 Avon Street, then 35 Morton Street, Andover. He founded an amateur theatrical group 'The Barnstormers.' The subject of this illustration depicts the Honorable Caleb Cushing with Qiying, the Viceroy of Liangguang, signing the Treaty of Wang Hiya in 1844, the first treaty between China and the United States. The ceremony was held in the Kun Lam Temple, Macau. Caleb was appointed United States Ambassador to China by President Tyler.
