Description:

Chippendale Carved Mahogany Side Chair, Boston, Massachusetts, with carving possibly by John Welch (1711-1789),the serpentine crest centering a carved shell with flanking acanthus leaves, on the vasiform splat and shaped stiles above the upholstered compass seat and shaped rails, the frontal cabriole legs with shell- and pendant-carved knees and webbed claw-and-ball feet joined to the raking chamfered rear legs by block-, vase- and ring-turned stretchers, old refinish, (minor imperfections),ht. 39 1/2, seat ht. 18 in.
