Description:

Two Upholstered Shell-carved Open Armchairs, French Canada, late 18th/early 19th century, each with serpentine crest rail centering a shell above upholstered back, curving molded arms and concave supports, serpentine shaped and carved seat rails centering shells, overupholstered seats and carved front legs with scroll-carved feet joined to the shaped rear legs by double chapeau de gendarme-type cross-stretchers, (imperfections and repairs),ht. to 36 1/4, seat ht. to 18 in.

Provenance: These chairs are from the same family as a French Canadian commode sold by Skinner on August 11, 2012, as lot 1032.Note: The back seat rail on one chair is branded "POITRA."

one chair with crack and repair to left stile, back right leg, cracks and repinning to arms and arm supports, and heavy wear; the other chair with cracks and repairs around some pinnings - at junction of arm and support, seat corners, and general heavy wear.
