Bas-relief with signature/foundry mark "MANZÙ" encircled by the words "Fonderia MAF Milano" on the u.r. corner of the reverse, 19 3/4 x 15 3/8 in. (49.5 x 39.0 cm),suspended within a metal frame set onto a stone plinth; La Guerra, Variante IV, 1954, signed "Manzù" in pencil l.l., numbered "2/30" l.r., image size approximately 12 5/8 x 8 1/4 in. (32.0 x 21.0 cm),framed.

Condition: Bas-relief with surface imperfections that appear intentional, minor surface dust; lithograph with acid burn, subtle rippling, not examined out of frame.

N.B. Scenes of violent death in which the protagonist is a man hanging upside down observed by a cloaked figure is a recurring motif in the sculpture and prints of Manzù. Prominent examples include a panel of the left door of Porta Vaticana (1964) and a bronze from 1963 in The Manzù Collection at Ardea, Italy. The repository of the Manzù Collection brings together about ninety sculptures, metal stamps, minting dies, and medallions, and an inventory of 330 graphic works by Manzù. It is also the burial place of the artist.
