The consignor has provided the following provenance: The painting was made of a bouquet picked in a garden on Beacon Hill. Mrs. Shaw thought the bouquet was stunning and wanted a painting done of it immediately. The artist, Finetti (alternate spelling),was working in the neighborhood or was in Boston Common and was asked to come in and paint the bouquet. (Since he lived in Brookline he may have been known to the Shaw family.) He did so and agreed to return in a year to apply a coat of varnish. He did not return the following summer, and they later found that he had died. This painting was given by the Shaws to Bertha Nichols, when she retired as a companion to the Shaw children, and then descended in the family. The painting remained unvarnished until the late 1990's when the family had it conserved.
