Limbo, The Harrowing of Hell (Canto 4)
Unsigned.
Ink on laid paper, sheet sizes to 6 1/2 x 9 5/16 in. (16.0 x 23.8 cm),framed.
Condition: Creasing, toning, scattered staining, losses to edges of the sheets that do not affect the images, sheets mounted to secondary paper support, hinged at top edges of the reverse to the backing mats.

N.B. These drawings were likely made after the Thomas Piroli engravings of Flaxman's drawings of Dante's Divine Comedy, published as "Compositions from The Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise of Dante Alighieri" by Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, London, in 1807. Flaxman's original drawings for Divine Comedy were made in black chalk and are part of the collection of the Houghton Library at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
