Mary Cassatt (American, 1844-1926)

Margot Wearing a Bonnet (No. 5), c. 1902 (Breeskin, 183 ii/ii). Signed "Mary Cassatt" in pencil l.r. Drypoint on laid paper with figural shield watermark, plate size 7 x 5 1/2 in. (17.7 x 14.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Margins over 1 1/4 inches with three edges deckled, cockling, subtle toning and light-striking, two thinned spots to verso, masking tape residue to upper margin.

Provenance: Descended from the sitter to her grandniece Ellen Meigs; gift from Meigs to the family of the present owner.

N.B. Margot Lux was from a small village outside of Paris, and was the subject of nearly fifty compositions by Cassatt.

The sheet measures 13 1/8 x 8 3/8 inches, with all but the lower edge deckled. The main thinned spot is a circular area in the background to the left of the figure (though it is on the reverse) and is about 1/4 inch in diameter. The second one is a pinpoint-sized area to the right margin (also on the reverse)There is very minor soiling at the edges of the sheet, primarily in the deckled on the right edge. There are masking tape hinges at the upper corners on the verso. The work is framed behind glass.
