Four George III Sterling Silver Covered Sauce Tureens, London, 1778-79, William Holmes, maker, each with cover surmounted by pinecone-form finial, the oval urn-form bodies with beaded rims and husk garlands supported by floral roundels over stop-fluting, with two reeded handles, the conforming foot decorated with further husks and beading, with engraved armorials to cover and body, lg. handle over handle 9 1/4 in., approx. 105.4 troy oz.
All finials bent very slightly. All lids and tureens numbered. Number 1 with metal fatigue to joint of handle and visible seams to garlands. Number 4 with nicks to edge of cover. Otherwise all four in good condition with only minor usage wear abrasions, pinprick dents.
