Gourd Cricket Cage with Tortoiseshell and Jade Cover, China, Qing dynasty, short gourd-shaped cage resting on a separately carved wood four-legged stand, the gourd carved in low relief with a continuous landscape with mountains, trees, and a scholar riding on a donkey, the tiered wood cover with tortoiseshell face with two layers of openwork: the top in jade depicting an archaic-style chilong intermingled with scrolls, and the other in tortoiseshell with a shou character medallion, trace of a four-character Qianlong mark incised to tortoiseshell face, ht. 5 1/4 in.
