Girl at Tree. Signed and dated "B. Karfiol 191..." l.r. Oil on canvas, 20 3/4 x 10 3/4 in., framed (under glass). Condition: Minor surface grime.
Provenance: Purchased by Mrs. Charlotte H. Jordan from Our Gallery, Inc., March 20, 1927.
N.B. A photocopy of the original purchase invoice accompanies the lot. Our Gallery, Inc., was co-founded by Edith Halpert and Berthe (Bea) Kroll Goldsmith in November 1926 "for the purpose of promoting a group of progressive American artists, many of whom were friends of Edith and Samuel Halpert." (1) Later in 1927, the gallery changed its name to the Downtown Gallery to emphasize its Greenwich Village location. (2)
