Description:

Continental School, 17th Century

Three-quarter Length Portrait of a Young Dutch Girl
Inscribed, dated, and signed indistinctly "Ætatis.../...16/...Cuyp F..." u.l.
Oil on canvas, 34 1/4 x 22 3/4 in. (87.0 x 57.8 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, losses/flaking, craquelure, skinning, surface grime.

Provenance: Purchased over thirty years ago on Shelter Island, Long Island, New York, from a private collector.
Estimate $1,500-2,500

Stamped and inscribed "No. 1433 (blue stamp). Cuyp/Portrait of a Child/Wyckoff (handwritten in ink)" on a label affixed to the stretcher. Also inscribed "M...Whitney" on a small gummed label on the stretcher.

The inscription located in the u.l. corner is virtually unreadable at this point, and may have been apocryphal. Canvas was lined some time ago. Under UV light retouch does not fluoresce, and there is an even, golden varnish overall. There is, however, evidence of repair to the canvas. In the center of the apron there is a 2-inch horizontal crack that has been retouched, the area measuring about 1 3/4 x 2 inches overall. Prevalent craquelure with scattered paint losses, the craquelure showing some tenting to the u.r. corner.
