Description:

After Guido Reni (Italian, 1575-1642)

Angel Appearing to St. Jerome
Inscribed indistinctly "Guido Ren.../..." l.l.
Oil on canvas, 81 x 59 1/4 in. (206.0 x 150.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, restored tears, craquelure, skinning, surface grime.

Provenance: Ex collection Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, Alabama, gift of Andrew L. Lynn in 1971; purchased by the current owner from C.G. Sloan & Co., February 6, 1987, Lot 1851.

N.B. The painting at hand is a copy after an original by Guido Reni now in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan. The authorship of the copy is not known. Dr. Arnauld Brejon of the Louvre viewed this copy in the collection of the Birmingham Museum in 1977 and remarked that the inscription probably once read "Guido Reni fec (name illegible) Inv." This inscription would likely have listed the copyist's name. It has been suggested that the copyist was Italian, from the second half of the 17th century.
Estimate $4,000-6,000
