Description:

American School, 20th Century

ASK ALEXANDER, c. 1920. Inscribed "AV/YAGA/BOMBAY" within the matrix l.r., titled across the top. Color lithographic poster, image size 41 x 27 1/4 in., framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame.

N.B. Alexander, "The Man Who Knows," born Claude Alexander Conlin (1880-1954),was a vaudeville headliner from the early 1900s into the 1930s. Although his advertising posters portray him in Indian costume, and all indicate that they were printed by Av Yaga, Bombay, these flourishes were probably intended to add to the performer's mystique. Experts believe that all the posters were actually printed in the United States. (Reynolds, C. Raymond, and Regina Reynolds, 100 years of magic, New York: Grosset & Dunlap),1976, p. 14. 1.
