N.B. Fondly remembered as the "godmother of downtown arts", Elizabeth Straus worked tirelessly to support New York City's cultural life through her leadership and graciousness. (1) She was a a lifelong trustee for the Museum of Modern Art, and chaired its International Program since its inception in 1952. Through this program, she met most if not all of the artists who came to New York for their shows, and hosted dinner parties with husband Donald Blun Straus in their honor. The present work was dedicated by Miró after a visit to their home, which is recalled by her family.

Straus also founded the Cultural Council Foundation, which supported hundreds of art non-profits before it merged with the New York State Council on the Arts, and served on the board of the New York Botanical Garden for over 40 years.

A photo-certificate from ADOM accompanies the lot; we wish to thank Ariane Lelong-Mainaud of ADOM for her kind assistance.
