Ink and wash over pencil on laid paper, 12 3/16 x 8 1/2 in. (31.0 x 21.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Creasing, rippling, affixed along both vertical edges to mat board support, laid paper appears to be mounted to a paperboard support.

Provenance: Through the collection of W.G. [William George] and Olivia Constable.

N.B. W.G. Constable was Curator of Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and an expert on Canaletto.

Inscribed in pencil on the reverse of the mat, "French, c. 1700/The Death of Julius Caesar."

Underdrawing in graphite in several areas. Sheet is backed on a secondary paper support which is visible at the upper left corner where the edge of the original sheet is missing and there is a tiny loose edge. The sliver of loss at the u.l. edge measures 1-5/8 inches long and 1/8 inch wide at the widest point which is at the top. The support sheet is affixed along each of the vertical sides to the mat board underneath. The edges of the drawing a fully visible. There are two diagonal creases at the lower center edge, measuring 2-1/2 inches overall and located about 2-1/2 inches in from the lower left corner. Creasing to three corners, more pronounced to the l.r. Overall mild soiling, with more soiling to the l.l. corner. Scattered minor fox marks.
