Description:

Early American Artillery Sighting Instrument, c. early 19th century, round brass plate with scale and level, with two standing sights, square brass shaft, beveled on one side and marked WM. DAVENPORT. MAKER. PHILa., engraved on one end with a script US, and MORt./HOWt. with the size of the shot, and on the other side GUNS/CALIb/SHOT with a range for 3 to 42 pound guns, bottom marked with a scale from one to twelve inches, lg. 17 1/8 in.

Note: William Davenport (1778-1829) is listed as a mathematical instrument maker in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1802-1829.
