Description:

George III Sterling Silver Two-part Centerpiece, London, 1801-02, Joseph Preedy, maker, ovoid tureen with a laurel leaf border and two ring handles supported by scrolled acanthus mounts, on four acanthus-scrolled legs with ball feet, further raised on a stand with a lifted center similarly decorated with inset acanthus leaves and two applied medallions with engraved armorials framed within an applied laurel wreath, also raised on four acanthus-scrolled legs with ball feet, total ht. 7 5/8, lg. 17 1/2 in., approx. 141.1 troy oz.

N.B. The maker's mark "I.J" has often been misattributed to a number of other silversmiths including Joseph Plimmer, and is not included in Arthur Grimwade's London Goldsmiths 1697-1837 Their Lives and Marks.
Estimate $4,000-6,000

Based on its form, the tureen may have originally had a cover and liner. However, the interior and rim do not have wear constant with repeated removal of a cover or liner. Stand with central surface irregularities (possibly from heat damage),a small patch of which is visible from the front. The medallions and laurel wreaths were later additions, although they still have good age. They have not been unscrewed to inspect what is underneath them. The feet and rings are not individually marked. Age-typical wear throughout.
